T.C. Ministry Of Education Primary School Programme

Time frame: 08.00-13.40
The adaptation principles of T.C. MEB Program at Ütopya
Our aim is to not only give our children the abilities for their school and professional life, but also to develop their own life. To help them gain wide abilities we like to give them abilities to interpret and analyse with critical and creative thinking, using technology, to communicate and cooperate with others, have a good level of social relations and broaden their vision. We build our T.C. MEB program on these three main attitudes.

1- We build our daily life at school on Maslow’s Needs Theory
Please see Ütopya Introductory brochure for detailed information.

2-To give opportunities to our children to be with children, children with adults, children with nature and children with society.
In terms of their personal, social and emotional development.

3- To supply them with events and studies based on finding out, by thinking and researching, learning by experiencing.
In terms of cognitive development and perdurable learning

For Example: Three different learning curriculum styles regarding fishes life:

a. Teacher lectures regarding fish and children listen (Teacher centred learning),
b. Children make fish from cardboard, research from internet (Learning by doing, experiencing),
c. Starting with what children know about fish. Activities prepared about what they want to learn and what needs to be taught. For example, as a classroom they go on a school trip outside school, go fishing or buy fish, every student buys fish and works on them in the classroom; also everything else they want to learn is researched through ICT; shared with their friends, they exchange knowledge. (Profound learning by experimenting, experiencing, thinking and questioning)

These system’s effects are clearly seen, although they are very young, by internalisation at Ütopya; improving our students analytic thinking; adopting what they learn into life.

Grade 1 at Ütopya:
At Ütopya all lessons are taught using experimentation, experiencing, thinking and questioning methods and are student orientated.

Reading-writing activities start with drawing lines to improve hand muscles. Reading-writing activities carried out using the “Sound based sentence method”. With the sound based sentence method, students feel the sounds in everyday life and recognise them. By adding the sounds together, syllables are formed. Then from these syllables, words are created. With words sentences are built and then texts. After this process, we are pleased to see continuous and comprehensive reading and understanding are achieved.

Our grade 1 students learn the ways to get information to give them the ability to express verbally and written what they see, hear and think. They make friends with books and become keen readers.

The knowledge of life lessons’ subjects are supported with activities parallel with the subjects in our Science and Technology Lab, after discussion in the classrooms. To link the lessons, real life school trips are organised, which also aim to improve behavioural abilities in social surroundings.

In our maths lessons we work through understanding, enumeration, grouping, inquiring, correlating, critical thinking, guessing, analysing, synthesising. We sustain learning by doing, experiencing and having fun, supported with visual materials.

Grade 2 at Ütopya
Ütopya evolves out of a structure for learning all lessons by experiencing, experimenting, thinking and enquiring, and practices learning and education centred on the students.

Türkish Lessons: We strongly emphasise reading and comprehension studies. It is very important that one can pass on what they read, listened to, and their own thoughts, verbally and in written form.

One aim of these lessons is that writing should be neat, and the characters in the writing should be established. Regarding the reading of texts, we search for deep information before and after the lesson to support this lesson. Research by all methods is shared by the class according to the presentation methods. We prepare classroom panels by adding research and visuals which relate to the text. Also, during the lessons, we answer 6W questions (Who? Where? When? What? Which? Why?), study to improve their vocabulary and the lessons are linked with day to day life.

Math Lessons: All topics are supported with tangible materials. One aim of this lesson is to show our children where they can use these in the real life. Without a doubt we carry out all activities regarding this. We develop the ability to work out the calculations in the head. Students are encouraged to find different solutions. We find the children with different levels via “checklists” and “constant observation” and prepare different activities which are appropriate to their level.

The Knowledge of Life Lessons: All studies are related to life. We set activities to improve the students’ research side and sustain an environment to communicate their opinions and create ideas. Lessons are supported with visual materials and trips. We prepare a classroom panel after the completion of each topic with all the information gained, research studies done and notes taken in and outside the classroom.

Grade 3 at Ütopya
Turkish Lessons:It is a process which we aim to teach our students to read, comprehend, and gain the ability to express what they learn orally and in writing. Our aim during this process is to prepare a student to perceive and question the society he/she lives in and the world, and to improve their self-confidence which he/she needs to create the new. During our studies we use visual materials, CDs, educational games such as Bingo cards, taboo etc. With the creative drama method we have activities to improve our students’ potential in creating, self-confidence, taking initiative, individual thinking, self control and problem solving. We also use techniques such as association games, writing columns, research and presentation, preparing wall newspapers, drawings, thoughts that photographs bring to mind, preparing a story book etc., to realise our schools main aim and approach. To provide good reading habits we set two lessons a week for reading activities and use our library effectively. Students act the book they read by the drama method. By recording the play, the micro learning technique is applied. Moreover, our students who prepare the story book or story box share their work on the story and poem days organised. In our school, under the CAS projects’ aim, our students can work on a project individually or in a group, on the subject or a field they like by researching, exploring, commenting, giving their opinion, retrieve the new information, creating individual thinking and come to conclusions with their related advisor teacher.

The Knowledge of Life: : During our lessons we have a structural approach. Learning is more important than teaching. Learning is thought as a process. Students’ research is supported and we take into consideration how our students learn. We give great importance to group work to maintain learning together and to get them to accept team spirit. We set the best suitable learning environment for producing information, improving their problem solving abilities and productivity, with learning and education studies. Our philosophy is centred on student’s individual differences and we prepare our activities accordingly. We actively keep our students connected to every step of the learning process. Classroom activities are prepared considering the level differences and make sure all our students join in all activities.

Math Lessons:Math lessons are thought out in such a way that every student believes they can manage math without being scared of it and join in happily. Whilst planning, the students’ level of development and individual differences are taken into consideration. Studies are carried out to improve perception, discovery, thinking, commenting and synthesising abilities by using visual materials. We also work to instigate the desire of learning to our children, and then making learning fun and storing the information learnt in the long term memory during the learning process. We prepare an atmosphere for our children to produce different problems by using different materials and create different solutions. We try to stop student’s prejudgements against Math by showing likeness between math’s concepts and concrete concepts. With this method, which is called ‘analogy’, we actively maintain the involvement of our students by using the events they come across in their daily life. A ‘way to’ solution, scenario method, analyses, show and get it done, experimenting activities and learning by play, and station study are some of the methods we use in the classroom. Our students prepare math games, gather tools regarding the topics and display their work on the school panel.

Grade 4 at Ütopya
Grade 4 students at Ütopya, have a Socratic discussions on chosen subjects with their grade 5 and 6 friends every morning before classes, during “circle time”, on the agenda. In our school, during the discussion of the topics with the grade 4 students, they are made aware of the targets and the aims of the information given. Weekly plans are put on the board by the teacher every Monday and during the week students get information regarding the activities and subjects to be learnt. Also, at the beginning of each lesson, the teacher prepares visual plans to give information regarding the subject process. During lessons students follow activities with their teacher’s guidance for learning time management and to get a sense of time using a stop watch. The activities chosen during lessons are selected for ‘multiple intelligence’.

Türkish Lessons: Subsidiary activities related to speaking, listening, reading, writing and comprehension are done by activities and events in the individual learning system. We aim activities to internalise abilities from simple to complex, such as speaking, description, visual reading, visual presentation according to the methods and techniques required, taking notes, listening to instructions, guessing, analysing the text they read, synthesising their knowledge, creating a new story, expressing themselves verbally and in writing.

With the present day being the information and technology century, every achievement is supported with computer activities. Subject and daily life achievements sustain education as a whole with trips, experiments and observation of self hygiene abilities and education in nature.

Math Lessons: Subjects and achievements are internalised by cementing the information learnt by teaching and discussing where they will be relevant in real life. Subjects are related to daily life thinking by straight forward verbal methods, descriptions, discovery, scenario, analysing, showing and getting it done, rules, experiment activities and games.

Social Studies Knowledge: Subjects and achievements are planned to teach by individualised learning methods in a group, in pairs and individual studies. Computer supported learning method and discussion, showing and getting it done, drama, problem solving methods are put into practice.

TURKISH LESSON: Our aim in Turkish lessons is to give our students reading and comprehension skills and to be able to express what they have understood verbally and in writing. In Turkish lessons, students are prepared for life, familiarise themselves with the society they live in, recognise the characteristics of their society and develop a critical point of view for the society and the World. In our lessons we use visuals, videos and computer based games reinforcing to the appropriate student level. With creative drama, composing a story and visual reading methods we set up activities for our students to use their potential in self trust, taking the initiative, free thinking, self control and problem solving. As a result of this we aim to bring up individuals who become skilled at learning, thinking, producing, sharing, and are self confident and successful.

MATH LESSON:
Loving the lesson without fear, doing with comprehension, cementing classroom activities by choosing events from the daily life, making sure the students know what they need to use, where, and when, and find different solutions. We aim that they set up problems from daily life and develop different solutions by bringing different points of view to these problems, modifying their learning style and feel they are an individual.

SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON: Having an awareness of where they live, knowing the characteristics of the city, region and the country they are in, and being aware of his/hers country’s position in the World. Grade 6 at Ütopya
TURKISH LESSON:
  • Turkish education is a process which aims to give the students the ability of reading, comprehension and expressing what they have learnt verbally and in writing. Our aim during this process is to prepare a student to perceive and question the society he/she lives in and the world, and to improve their self-confidence which he/she needs to create the new. During our studies we use visual materials, CDs, educational games. With the creative drama method we have activities to improve our students’ potential in creating, self-confidence, taking initiative, individual thinking, self control and problem solving. The Turkish program in our school aims to give the passion to read, to bring up people who are master in expressing themselves verbally and in writing, having a full command of their language and digested the grammatical rules of their language.
  • We also use techniques such as association games, writing columns, research and presentation, preparing wall newspapers, drawings, thoughts that photographs bring to mind, preparing a story book etc., to realise our schools main aim and approach. In every lesson we use listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities. To improve the right use of these abilities is necessary for the other lessons as well as Turkish lessons. Good education in the mother tongue will affect the students’ academic success positively. There is a direct relation between comprehending what one reads and academic success. The students must use and improve their written abilities for written quizzes and preparing their homework, their speaking abilities whilst lecturing a subject and asking questions, and most of all, their listening abilities whilst following the lecture. These abilities are improved not only in Turkish lessons but in all lessons. For this reason, Turkish teachers work in cooperation with the other subject teachers. As a result of Turkish education, emotions, thoughts, ideas and observations serving to a specific purpose should be passed on to the other people verbally or in writing; because the way our society lives in this century, we are obliged to not only understand others but also make ourselves understood.
The main aim of language education, which is fundamental for our school, is that as well as teaching communication abilities, to improve their “thinking” ability. For that we should always keep in mind that to be able to think in Turkish can only occur if we have a high level of Turkish language.
MATH LESSON:
  • Topic: Fractions
  • Gain: Learning the concept of fractions
  • Topic: Sets
  • Gain: Grasps intersection, combination and difference calculations.
Aristotle said ”human wants to know”. Ütopya’s sense of education is devoted to feed the hunger for learning which exist in human beings naturally. Our game and activities enrich the curriculum aims to get maths loved by all children and create a positive attitude towards math. In our school, math education is not done only in the classrooms. From time to time we do outdoor activities and maintain the relationship between math and real life. We give at least one hour a week to these kind of activities. The rest of time we carry out student centred learning. As an Ütopya family we believe that creativity is encouraged by allowing the students to ask questions freely.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
  • In our school, during Social Studies lessons, we follow the education system which is from near to far, simple to complex and from concrete to abstract. The era we work in is viewed with their values, knowledge and their way of thinking, the results of events and facts today are studied at every angle. Every study is established on certain concepts such as change and persistence, similarity and difference, reason and result, time and chronology, fact and thought. To cement the subjects we get support from historical art and pictures, post cards, films, maps and trips and observations. We make sure we find a connection between the topics and daily events. As a result of this education our students become individuals who can create new information from what they have learnt and have a high sense of curiosity and an inquiring mind.
